Covering your webcam, a good idea.

Covering your webcam, a good idea.

Covering the webcam on your computer is a good idea. Don’t take my word for it, just see what FBI Director James Comey has to say about it:

There’s some sensible things you should be doing, and that’s one of them,” Comey said regarding webcam covers. “You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I don’t have a webcam. Is that OK? I blocked the selfiecam on my iPhone. Maybe more important.

If you don’t have a webcam you’re safe, from this kind of spyware intrusion at least. Spyware/Malware can still infect your Mac and take screenshots, steal your keychain data etc. so having the right protections installed is never a bad idea. I make it a habit to put my phone flat on a desk or table so the camera is always looking up at the ceiling, nothing to see 🙂 I use my phone for FaceTime too much to cover the camera but there are some slick covers for iOS devices out there.
